Put Away is a System 7 drag & drop utility which puts files in folders based on file types and creators, much like the System 7 Finder puts System-specific files in special folder locations. You can configure Put Away to recognize as many types and creators and folder locations as you wish.
If you launch Put Away as a normal application, you will see a screen of instructions. This screen also allows you to reset Put Away, clearing its old folder locations and file types. Click OK to quit.
If you launch Put Away by dragging one or more files into its icon, Put Away will copy or move each file it recognizes to the location you’ve designated. If it doesn’t recognize a file type and creator it will ask you to select a folder location for this type of file. Subsequently it will recognize this sort of a file.
If a file is on the same disk as its designated folder, Put Away will move the file into the folder from its old location. If you want to copy (rather than move) file(s) into folder(s), hold down the Option key when you drag the file(s) into the Put Away icon. If a file is on a different disk than its designated folder, it is copied to the designated folder. The original file is left intact in its old location. If Put Away finds a file with the same name in the designated folder, it will ask you whether you want to overwrite the existing file.
Put Away stores its settings in the Preferences folder inside the System Folder. Each Put Away preferences file is named “Put Away prefs” where the name preceding “ prefs” is the name of the Put Away application. This allows you to work with multiple copies of Put Away by naming each one differently.
If you want to edit a Put Away prefs file, you will have to use ResEdit (or launch Put Away and click the Reset button to clear everything). If you elect to use ResEdit, use ResEdit to open Put Away first so you can use the TMPL resource in Put Away to view the Loc# resource in the prefs file. Each entry in the Loc# resource consists of a file type, a creator, the parent ID of the folder, a volume reference number and a folder name. You can delete an entry in the Loc# resource by selecting the row of four asterisks (****) preceding an entry and hitting the delete key. I don’t recommend that you try setting the parent ID, volume reference number and folder name manually — let Put Away do that work for you. Because it uses folder IDs and volume reference numbers, Put Away is generally immune to changes introduced by renaming volumes and parent folders.
Put Away has not been extensively tested on all Macintosh models. It works fine on a Mac II, a IIsi and a IIfx. It requires System 7.
